Aggregate

Buckshot aggregate is a rock material commonly used in various construction and landscaping applications, including playground surfaces and for making concrete. It consists of small, rounded stones typically produced by crushing larger rocks or gravel. The term “buckshot” refers to the size of the individual stones, which resemble the size of buckshot pellets used in shotgun shells.

There are two standard sizes of buckshot aggregate: 1/4 and 5/16. These measurements refer to the approximate diameter of the stones. 

1/4 Buckshot Aggregate: This size of buckshot aggregate has an average diameter of 1/4 inch (approximately 6.35 millimeters). It consists of small, rounded stones commonly used in various construction projects. Due to its relatively small size, 1/4 buckshot aggregate is often used as a base material for concrete slabs, pathways, and driveways. It provides a stable foundation and helps with drainage while allowing for compacting and leveling.

5/16 Buckshot Aggregate: The 5/16 buckshot aggregate has a slightly larger diameter of 5/16 inches (approximately 7.94 millimeters). It consists of slightly larger stones compared to the 1/4 size. This size of buckshot aggregate is also used in construction projects but is more commonly utilized in landscaping applications. It is often used as decorative gravel for pathways, garden beds and as a mulch substitute. The larger size provides a visually appealing texture while offering good drainage characteristics.

Pearock or Pea gravel is a type of small, rounded rock that is commonly used in construction projects and landscaping.  The color of pea gravel can range from natural earth tones like beige, brown, and gray to more vibrant colors like white or red, depending on the source and region.

Uses of Pea Gravel in Construction Projects:

Landscaping: Pea gravel is used in landscaping projects and as a decorative element to create pathways, driveways, and patios. Its small size and smooth texture make it comfortable to walk on, providing an attractive and natural look to outdoor spaces.

Drainage: Pea gravel is an excellent material for drainage applications. Its porous nature allows water to filter through easily, preventing water accumulation in areas such as garden beds, around the foundation of buildings, or in French drains. It provides effective water management while minimizing soil erosion.

Backfilling: Pea gravel is often used as backfill material in construction projects in trenches or excavated areas around pipes, underground utilities, or retaining walls. The small stones create a stable and permeable fill that promotes proper drainage.

Erosion Control: It can be used to create retaining walls or as a protective layer to minimize soil erosion caused by water runoff.

Binder rock is also used in landscaping for a variety of purposes. It can be used for erosion control, as it helps to hold soil in place, preventing it from washing away during heavy rains. It’s also used for drainage, as the space between the rocks allows water to pass through rather than pooling on the surface. In addition, binder rock can be used to create a decorative element in landscape design, either as a path or a border around a garden bed.

Other uses of binder rock include its application in building foundations, retaining walls, and septic drain fields due to its excellent drainage properties. Its durability and ability to withstand heavy loads make binder rock a versatile material in construction and landscaping.
