Equipment Operator

As an Equipment Operator within the asphalt paving industry at Wm. Mueller & Sons, you hold a vital position in our construction process. You’ll be at the heart of our operations, responsible for the efficient operation of various heavy machinery used in paving and road construction, such as pavers, rollers, dozers, bobcats, and graders.

Department:           Construction

Reporting to:         Job Foreman

Job Purpose:         To operate various construction equipment on the job site safely and accurately under the direction of the foreman and project                                 manager. 

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Walk around equipment inspections.
  2. Ability to set up and run electronic grade controls.
  3. Basic math knowledge.
  4. Ability to read maps and plans.
  5. General equipment maintenance, change oil & grease.
  6. Valid CDL driver’s license.
  7. Ability to climb and maneuver around and on equipment.
  8. Ability to perform general labor, shoveling, raking and sweeping.
  9. Educated in construction safety.
  10. Ability to work with others, communicate effectively and take direction from foreman and project manager.
  11. Need to pass random drug and alcohol testing.
  12. All other duties as determined by management

Key working relationships

The Equipment Operator will work under the supervision of the Job Foreman but will also be expected to work under their own initiative.  There is a need for effective communication skills with all people on the job, those employed by Wm Mueller & Sons Inc., inspectors, and truck drivers.

Hours of work

Typically, 5 days a week Monday – Friday, occasional Saturdays if workload and weather requires.  Hours per week vary between 40 and 60 hours per week during the construction season.

Laborer

As a Laborer at Wm. Mueller & Sons, you play a crucial role in our operational success. 

Department:     Construction

Reporting to:    Job Foreman

Job Purpose:    Perform General Labor

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Ability to shovel, rake and sweep.
  2. Ability to adjust manholes.
  3. Ability to operate small equipment.
  4. Ability to maintain small equipment.
  5. Ability to bend and twist.
  6. Ability to check grade.
  7. Educated in construction safety.
  8. Ability to work with others, communicate effectively and take direction from dispatch and management.
  9. Need to pass random drug and alcohol testing.
  10. All other duties as determined by management

Key working relationships

The General Laborer will work under the supervision of the job foreman and project manager.  There is a need for effective communication skills with the job foreman, project manager and other employees on the job.

Truck Driver

Our truck drivers play a crucial role at Wm. Mueller & Sons, linking our equipment and materials with our work locations.

Department(s):   Construction & Carver Pit

Reporting to:      Dispatcher & Management

Job Purpose:      Deliver material to job site, to pits for stock, or pit to pit.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Walk around equipment inspections.
  2. Basic math knowledge.
  3. Ability to read maps.
  4. Ability to tarp loads.
  5. Ability to maneuver truck on job site and back into tight spaces.
  6. General equipment maintenance, change oil & grease, change tires.
  7. Valid CDL driver’s license.
  8. Ability to climb and maneuver around and on equipment.
  9. Educated in construction & driving safety.
  10. Ability to work with others, communicate effectively and take direction from dispatch and management.
  11. Ability to perform general labor, shoveling, raking and sweeping.
  12. Need to pass random drug and alcohol testing.
  13. All other duties as determined by management

Shop Mechanic | Field Technician

Department: Hamburg Shop

Reporting to: Management

Job Summary: Wm. Mueller & Sons has an opening for a full-time, experienced Shop Mechanic | Field Technician to work on heavy equipment and truck repairs in a shop environment and in the field. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently.

Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical issues on heavy equipment and machinery, including construction machinery.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complete tractor and trailer including truck engine, power train, and chassis.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and inspections to ensure equipment operates efficiently and safely.
  • Utilize diagnostic tools and equipment to identify and resolve mechanical problems.
  • Disassemble and reassemble machinery components as needed for repairs.
  • Replace faulty parts and perform necessary adjustments or alignments.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks, such as lubrication, filter changes, and fluid checks.
  • Keep detailed records of service and repairs performed, including parts used and labor hours.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and regulations.

Qualifications:

  • 2+ year technical degree or high school diploma/GED and 1-3 years of comparable mechanic experience
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulics, transmissions, undercarriage, track systems, components, electrical, and fuel systems
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and DOT inspection knowledge preferred
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to provide clear instructions and explanations.
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Own mechanic tool set
  • Ability to maintain safe and clean work environment
  • Must have a clean driving record. Must pass a drug test

Minimum Physical Requirements:

  • Push/pull up to 50 lbs
  • Lift/carry up to 60 lbs
  • Lift bulky objects
  • Standing, walking, using hands, talking, hearing, neck rotation, trunk rotation, stair climbing, ladder climbing, repetitive bending, kneeling, sustained squat, forward reaching, overhead reaching, supine overhead reaching, crawling, bin lift, high steps, fingering/grasping.
  • Working Conditions may be indoor and/or outdoor. Noise level may be loud at times.
